2010 WISE Women of the Year Awards BALLOT The 16th Annual WISE Women of the Year Awards Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The WISE Women of the Year Award is a prestigious honor that recognizes three extraordinary women who have made a significant impact on the business of sports and events. The WISE National Board of Directors has reviewed all nominees and recommends these candidates based on the following criteria: women who in their careers are visible leaders and continue to be an influential voice for women in the industry; women who have broken down barriers and helped create connections and new opportunities for other women while continuing to be a respected resource in the field; women who exemplify professional excellence and are role models for others: 2010 Candidates Jean Afterman The New York Yankees Stacey Allaster Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Lisa Baird United States Olympic Committee Sandy Barbour University of California Kathy Behrens National Basketball Association Doris Burke Basketball Analyst and Reporter Molly Fletcher Career Sports & Entertainment Roxanne Jones ESPN Publishing Lesa France Kennedy International Speedway Corporation Wendy Lewis Major League Baseball Suzanne Smith CBS Sports Jennifer Storms Gatorade Laurie Tucker FedEx Lesa Ukman IEG Jean Afterman Assistant General Manager, Vice President, The New York Yankees Afterman completed her eighth season (seventh as VP) as only the third female to hold this position in MLB history, with the team winning the World Series in 2009. In addition to her day-to-day managerial roles for the Yankees, Afterman has been instrumental in spearheading the organizations operations in Asia and the entire international baseball community. In 2007 she was profiled in Crain's New York Business' "100 Most Influential Women in New York Business" and in 2008 Forbes named her one of the top female executives in baseball. For her civic involvement, she received the "Exploring Leadership Award" for providing high school students career opportunities. Afterman also works with PENCIL, a non-profit mentoring program for the purpose of creating positive change in the public schools. Afterman is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She also has a J.D. degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Stacey Allaster Chairman and CEO, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Named Chairman and CEO in July, 2009, Allaster joined the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 2006 in the newly-created role of President. She is responsible for operations, business development, television, new media and tournament and player relations. Allaster has played an integral role in several Tour advancements, such as achieving equal prize money for women, which was accomplished at the 2007 Wimbledon and French Open tournaments. Allaster has been involved in adding other changes, such as on court coaching, electronic line calling, and a revised doubles scoring format. She is the only female tournament director of the ATP's Masters Series. A 15-year veteran of Tennis Canada, Allaster is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, with an MBA from the University's Ivy School of Business. Lisa Baird Chief Marketing Officer, The United States Olympic Committee In her current position since January, 2009, Baird directs the USOC's Sales and Marketing Division, and oversees the development of corporate sponsorship and licensing. Since joining the USOC, she has brought in Deloitte and Procter and Gamble as new sponsors, and renewed AT&T, Polo Ralph Lauren, VISA, Omega and others. Formerly she was with Brand Value Advisors, a consultancy that advised private equity and merger and acquisition clients. From 2005-2007, Baird was Senior VP, Marketing and Consumer Products, for the NFL, overseeing more than 150 licensees that delivered $3 billion in retail sales. At IBM from 1999-2005, she rose to Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing. Baird is a graduate of Penn State University, holding both a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Business Administration degree. Sandy Barbour Director of Athletics, University of California at Berkeley Barbour's career in intercollegiate athletic administration spans 29 years. Since her tenure at Berkeley began in 2004, the Cal program has captured 10 national team championships and 43 individual titles. In 2008-2009 the school won the national championship in women's swimming, runner-up in women's tennis and rowing; and in men's sports, 4th in swimming and gymnastics, and 5th in volleyball. From 2005-2008 the football team won four consecutive bowls (different titles). Cal supports a 27-sport program with 800 student athletes and a budget in excess of $60 million. From 2000-2004, she was deputy director of athletics at Notre Dame. Barbour also worked at Tulane, Northwestern and the University of Massachusetts. She graduated cum laude from Wake Forest, where she lettered for four years in field hockey; she later earned an M.S. in sports management at UMass and an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management. In 2006, she was selected the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators' Division 1-A National Administrator of the Year. Kathy Behrens Executive Vice President, Social Responsibility & Player Programs National Basketball Association Behrens oversees a group that manages all of the NBA's league and player social responsibility efforts, supports player growth and development and enhances the marketing opportunities for current and former players. She joined the NBA in 2000 as Vice President, Community Relations, responsible for public service initiatives, community outreach and employee volunteer programs. Previously, Behrens served as Executive Director of New York Cares, a non-profit that helps the neediest residents. In 1995, she served in New York Governor Mario Cuomo's administration. Currently Behrens is involved with several civic organizations, including New York Cares and the March of Dimes. She is a graduate of the University of Hartford. Doris Burke Basketball Analyst and Reporter, ESPN Burke calls a wide range of both men's and women's professional and college games for the NBA, WNBA and NCAA. In 2008, she was appointed sideline reporter for ESPN's marquee NBA games, including the NBA Finals on ABC. Burke also provides analysis for select NBA games on ESPN. Since 1998, she has been a WNBA analyst for the New York Liberty on MSG, and from 1998-2001 was a women's college basketball analyst for CBS Sports. Burke holds both an undergraduate and masters degree from Providence College where she was a basketball standout, holding seven records. In 2002, the Institute for International Sport named Burke one of 15 Sports Ethics Fellows, and in 2004 inducted her into the Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame. Molly Fletcher President, Client Representation, Career Sports & Entertainment (CS&E) Fletcher is a core member of the executive leadership team at CS&E, responsible for negotiating and securing over half-billion dollars in contracts for MLB players, NBA coaches, PGA and LPGA golfers, NCAA basketball and football coaches, and on-air sports personalities. She has directed and implemented strategies to expand the client base from 40 to over 250 of the world's premier athletes and coaches. In 1996, she was one of the first employees hired by CS&E and has held several positions over the years, including Director of Marketing. Fletcher is the author of Your Dream Job Game Plan: Five Tools for Becoming Your Own Career Agent, published by JIST in 2009. She is a graduate of Michigan State University, where she competed on the varsity tennis team. Fletcher has received several distinguished awards from the school and is involved in civic groups in Atlanta. Roxanne Jones Vice President, ESPN Publishing Jones joined ESPN in 1997 and was one of the founding editors of ESPN The Magazine, which has 14.7 million readers and received three ASME awards. In her role, she develops editorial initiatives and oversees a national team of sports writers and editors. Jones helped create the TV shows "ESPN Hollywood" and "Cold Pizza" - ESPN2's first morning sports and entertainment program. She has been successful at creating, monetizing and executing media content in print, broadcast, mobile and digital platforms. Formerly, Jones was Assistant Sports Editor at the New York Daily News. She is the author of Say it Loud, an Illustrated History of the Black Athlete (2009) and is involved with several civic and professional organizations. An alumna of Penn State University, she received an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Business. Lesa France Kennedy Chief Executive Officer, International Speedway Corporation Since joining the company in 1983, Kennedy has been instrumental in the growth of ISC, the motorsports entertainment company. She is also Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors and Vice Chairperson of NASCAR. She has received several awards, including being named the "Most Powerful Women in Sports" by Forbes (2009), the "Most Influential Women in Business" by Volusia Flagler Business Report (2006), and "Female Sports Executive of the Year" by Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal (2001). She received a B.A. in economics and a B.A. in psychology from Duke University. Wendy Lewis Senior Vice President, Diversity and Strategic Alliances, Major League Baseball, Office of the Commissioner Lewis implements MLB's Diversity Economic Impact Engagement (DEIE), one of the newest initiatives to advance the level of MLB's current workforce diversity and supplier diversity efforts. The program also implements methodologies and economic platforms and industry-wide diversity training. In addition, she is also the leader and strategist for MLB's Diverse Business Partners Program (DBP), the premier minority procurement program in professional sports, cultivating new and existing partnerships with minority-owned and women-owned business. Lewis has a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. She has received numerous business and civic awards. Suzanne Smith Producer/Director, CBS Sports Smith is in her 26th year with the CBS Television Network and is currently the only woman at any network producing or directing the NFL. In addition, she directs college basketball, including the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, U.S. Open Tennis, and the PGA Tour. Smith will be working her fourth Super Bowl this year. A three-time Emmy Award winner, Smith joined CBS as a production assistant in 1983 and over the years worked the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, Lillehammer, and Nagano, as well as the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. She graduated from Temple University where she played volleyball and softball, and received the first-ever volleyball scholarship award by the school. Smith is involved in many civic and educational programs, and is the founder of 'Girls Night,' a networking group for friends and colleagues in the media business. Jennifer Storms Senior Vice President, Sports and Event Marketing, The Gatorade Company Storms leads a team of marketing professionals as Gatorade continues its evolution from a sports beverage company to an innovative leader, expanding its reach to a broader range of athletes and active consumers. She oversees the brand's relationship with the NFL, NBA, WNBA, AVP, NHL, U. S. Soccer, MLS, as well as with other professional, collegiate and amateur teams. Storms joined Gatorade in June, 2009, after 14 years with Turner Broadcasting Network. At Turner, she was Senior VP of Turner Sports Marketing and Programming, overseeing both TBS and TNT networks, as well as online properties, such as NBA Digital Portfolio, NASCAR.com and PGA. For three consecutive years, Storms was named to Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal's "40 Under 40," and in 2008 Brandweek named her to "Marketers for a New Generation." She graduated with a B.A. from Northwestern University. Laurie A. Tucker Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing, FedEx Services Tucker is a career veteran at Federal Express, having joined the company in 1978 and has risen through the ranks to her current position. She has leveraged high-profile sponsorships for the FedExCup (PGA), NFL, NBA and FedEx Orange Bowl. Her managerial "People First" philosophy has led to many growth programs for employees, including a diversity council, women's network, mentoring, community involvement, and work-life balance. The FedEx Super Bowl spot, "Stick," won an Emmy award and other industry accolades. Tucker has numerous civic and professional involvements for which she has been recognized, and is co-chair of the FedEx March of Dimes campaign. She received both a B.A. and MBA from the University of Memphis. Lesa Ukman Chairman, IEG LLC For nearly three decades, Ukman has been working with sponsorship and property clients to value, measure and maximize partnerships of all types - including sports, arts, events, entertainment, nonprofits, destinations and membership organizations. Ukman is the primary product developer and oversees a team of researchers on both the buy-side and sell-side of the business. With the launch of the IEG Sponsorship Report in 1982, Ukman created a publication that defined an industry valued at more than $44 billion. The IEG Valuation Service calculates a fair market value of sponsorship and is utilized by some 200 leading brands for more than 2,000 properties. Ukman is co-founder of the company and is the author of ROS: How to Measure, Justify and Maximize Your Return on Sponsorship and Partnerships. She is an instructor at Northwestern University's Master of Arts in Sports Administration Program, and is a graduate of Colorado College.
